French influence in India was stunted 10 years after the Madras incident (where they attempted to take a trading post established by the British). In 1756, the French-backed the Nawab of Bengal, Suraj-ud-Daula, who attacked Calcutta. A year later the British defeated the Nawab and his French supporters at the Battle of Plassey. British influence was further extended and French influence further curtailed with the [L3 208 / Mysore Wars], and especially the fourth Mysore War, which ended in 1799.
